What is GUN ims/dry needling?

Gunn IMS is a whole body system for the diagnosis and treatment of persistent myofascial pain syndromes including muscle, joint, tendon, bursal, fascial, neural and biomechanical problems.
The approach, which uses intramuscular dry needling, is based on the neuropathic dysfunction model developed by the world renowned Dr Chan Gunn out of the University of British Columbia. This model looks at the whole body, not just isolated areas of pain, and considers dysfunction in the nervous system as the cause of persistent myofascial dysfunction and pain.
Through the use of dry needling, the treatment aims to neutralize trigger points (i.e. tight muscle bands) throughout the body and restore normal nervous system function which helps to alleviate pain and improve movement capabilities.

They are particularly effective for those who have not responded to other treatment modalities and are looking for relief from persistent muscle pain and tightness.
While the idea of needle insertion may seem daunting, most individuals experience minimal discomfort. The needles used are very thin and designed to penetrate the muscles easily. Sensations during the treatment can vary from a small twitch to a brief cramping feeling, but these are generally well-tolerated and short-lived. Soreness, similar to post workout soreness, is common the day after treatment.
Some individuals may feel immediate relief after just one session of IMS or Dry Needling. However, the number of treatments needed can vary based on the individual’s condition and response to the therapy. Typically, clients undergo a series of sessions, and improvements may be noticed progressively. Your therapist will assess your response after each session and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.
There is generally not a significant amount of downtime after IMS or Dry Needling. Individuals may experience some soreness or mild bruising at the needle sites, but this usually subsides within a few days. It’s often recommended to avoid intense physical activity for a short period after the session to allow the body to adjust and heal properly.
